Article: After the Chase

A brown colored wolf standing in the forest.

After the Chase

One quiet afternoon, as we made our way along a winding mountain park road, the stillness was suddenly shattered. Out of nowhere, a bighorn ewe launched herself off a rocky cliff and landed on the road just ahead of us. Before we could even process what we’d seen, a billowing cloud of dust followed… and from within it, a wolf emerged.

We instinctively slowed and eased back, becoming silent witnesses to a moment few ever get to see. The chase unfolded right in front of us, both animals moving with incredible speed and determination down the road. Then, just as suddenly as it began, the ewe made a daring leap over the edge, disappearing down a steep cliff toward the lake below—with the wolf close behind.

We continued a short distance and pulled into a small turnout, hearts still racing from what we had just witnessed. And then, as if the mountain had one final moment to share, the wolf reappeared. He stepped quietly out of the brush further down the road, crossed in front of us, and began making his way back up the mountainside.

Halfway up, he paused.

For a brief second, he turned and looked straight at us.

A look that felt less like coincidence, and more like a final chapter to the story-a silent acknowledgment from the wild.
