Article: A LIttle Sea Lion Drama

Sea Loins sunning on a rock.

A LIttle Sea Lion Drama

Some of the best wildlife moments happen when you least expect them…

While spending a week in the Great Bear Rainforest photographing the elusive spirit bears, our local guide, Marvin Robinson, suggested a small detour along the coastline.

It didn’t take long before the quiet stillness of the forest gave way to something entirely different.

Sound. Movement. Energy.

As we approached a rocky outcrop, a colony of sea lions came into view, some stretched out across the sun-warmed rocks, others restless and full of life. Without warning, many of them launched themselves into the water, one after another, splashing down with surprising grace for their size.

Then the real show began.

They swam alongside the boat, weaving through the wake, surfacing and diving with playful curiosity. At times, they came so close you could smell their breaths and see the intelligence in their eyes. It felt less like we were observing them… and more like they were observing us.

But not all of them joined the fun.

Back on the rocks, a few remained, holding their ground, claiming their space in the sun. There was a quiet tension there… a subtle jostling for position, a look, a shift, a reminder that even in moments of rest, there’s a story unfolding.

A Little Sea Lion Drama captures that balance, playfulness and power, curiosity and control… a small but unforgettable glimpse into life along the wild coast.
