Winter Wanderers
Sometimes, it’s the unexpected that stays with you the most…
On a cold winter day in Southeastern Alberta, we had set out with one goal in mind, to search the open prairies for snowy owls. The landscape stretched endlessly before us, a quiet blend of white snow and golden stubble fields, shaped by wind and winter.
It was peaceful… almost still.
And then, a flash of color caught our eye.
Against the muted tones of the prairie, two male ring-necked pheasants stood out instantly, vibrant, bold, and impossible to miss. Their iridescent greens, deep reds, and warm copper feathers brought life to the otherwise quiet winter scene.
We slowed to a stop.
They moved steadily through the field, wandering with purpose, their long tails trailing behind them as they navigated the snow-covered ground. There was something striking about their presence, these bursts of color in a landscape that felt almost monochrome.
In that moment, the search for snowy owls faded into the background.
Nature had offered something different… and just as meaningful.
Winter Wanderers captures that quiet surprise, a reminder that beauty doesn’t always appear where you expect it… but often reveals itself when you’re simply open to seeing it.
