Article: Born Free

Two wild horses colts standing by a spruce tree.

Born Free

Out in the west country of Alberta, we set out for a quiet drive not knowing what the day might bring. Then, as if nature had decided to offer us something truly special, we came upon an incredible sight—three separate bands of wild horses gathered together as one. It was the largest group of “Wildies” we had ever seen.

There’s often debate about these horses—are they truly wild, or are they feral, with roots tied to a domesticated past? Perhaps some once were. But standing there watching the young foals move freely among the herd, there was no question in our minds… these little ones were born to this life.

A life that is anything but easy.

From navigating harsh winters and searching for food beneath deep snow, to staying ever watchful for predators like cougars, wolves, and bears, their days are shaped by resilience and instinct. And yet, there is a quiet strength in them—a spirit that refuses to be tamed.

In those moments, watching them move across the landscape, we couldn’t help but feel we were witnessing the future of Alberta’s Wildies… strong, enduring, and truly free.
