Whispers of Red - Pine Grosbeak

The Story Behind the Image of Whispers of Red

Every season brings its own quiet wonders, but winter has a way of revealing beauty in the most unexpected places. When we lived on our acreage near Water Valley, Alberta, the forest around us would fall into a peaceful stillness once the snow arrived. Days grew shorter, the air turned crisp, and yet - it was in that calm and muted world that splashes of life would appear.

That’s when the pine grosbeaks would return.

We never saw them in summer; they preferred the high mountain forests for nesting and raising their young. But come winter, these gentle, rosy-red visitors would drift down from the hills, filling our trees with soft chatter and color. Their arrival was always something we looked forward to - a sign that even in the coldest months, nature continues to surprise and delight.

This image, Whispers of Red, was captured on one of those quiet mornings when the world felt still and time seemed to pause. Among the frosted branches, this brilliant grosbeak perched contentedly - a small but striking reminder that beauty doesn’t fade with the seasons; it simply changes form.
