Tiny Jewel - Black-Chinned Hummingbird

Since moving to the Columbia Valley, every new bird sighting feels like an introduction to a neighbor we hadn’t yet met. One quiet morning, as we sat enjoying the calm of our new surroundings, a flicker of color caught our eye. Hovering just beyond the flowers was a black-chinned hummingbird - our very first sighting of this species ever!

He was mesmerizing to watch - a flash of iridescent violet and black glinting in the morning sun, wings beating faster than the eye could follow. For a few precious moments, he hovered in stillness, the light catching his tiny frame like a jewel suspended in air. Then, just as quickly as he arrived, he was gone - leaving behind the soft hum of his wings and the joy of discovery that lingers long after.

There’s something magical about these little visitors - so small and delicate, yet so full of life and energy. That morning reminded us how even the tiniest creatures can bring wonder into a new place and make it feel like home.
