Article: The Unexpected Encounter

A grizzly Bear from our wildlife photography

The Unexpected Encounter

There’s something about early autumn mornings along the Chilko River that feels quietly alive… like the wilderness is just beginning to wake.

On this particular morning, we were gently cruising down the river on a grizzly bear safari, the air cool and still, when our guide suddenly caught sight of movement high along the mountainside. A grizzly was making his way down toward the river.

We eased across to the opposite bank, giving him space, and waited… not knowing if he would continue, or disappear back into the trees.

Then, just moments later, he emerged.

Stepping through the edge of the forest, he appeared as if he had always belonged to that exact place and moment. Calm. Intent. Completely unaware of the quiet anticipation on our side of the river.

Encounters like this aren’t planned. They can’t be.

And that’s what makes them so special.

For us, it wasn’t just about seeing a grizzly… it was about being present for a fleeting moment where everything aligned — the light, the stillness, the wildness of it all.

A simple, unexpected encounter… and one we’ll never forget.
