Article: Signs of Spring

Signs of Spring

Every year, as winter begins to loosen its grip, we find ourselves watching the calendar and the landscape a little more closely. Toward the end of March, there’s a quiet sense of anticipation that builds… because we know what we’re looking for.

A single, beautiful speck of blue.

We’ll head out along the backroads that wind through open fields, scanning every fence post, every wire, every rise in the land - hoping to catch that first glimpse. And then, there it is.

Perched proudly on a weathered fence post sits a male bluebird, glowing like a piece of the sky itself. Against the soft browns of early spring, his brilliant blue feathers feel almost unreal, like nature’s way of quietly announcing that the seasons are shifting once again.

For us, this moment has always meant one thing. Spring has arrived.

The males are always the first to return, claiming their territory and scouting for nesting sites, as if preparing the way. Not long after, the females will follow, and the fields that once felt empty begin to feel alive again.

On this particular morning, we stopped the truck and simply sat in stillness, watching him. No rush, no sound but the gentle breeze moving through the grasses. He remained there, calm and confident, a small but powerful reminder that life always returns, no matter how long the winter may feel.

It’s moments like these that stay with us - not because they are grand or dramatic, but because they are quietly certain.

A simple bird on a fence post…
and the promise of a new season beginning again.
