The Guardian - Lewis's Woodpecker

The Story Behind the Image of The Guardian

It was a quiet spring morning when we spotted this colorful Lewis’s woodpecker perched high on the remains of an old tree, basking in the early sunshine. His soft pink breast and iridescent green wings shimmered in the light as he kept a vigilant watch over his mate below, tending to their nest hidden deep within the cavity of the weathered trunk.

Lewis’s woodpeckers are fascinating birds - unlike most of their kind, they often dart out like flycatchers, darting from their perch to snatch insects in midair before returning to their lookout. But on this morning, there was no rush to hunt. His focus was clear - to guard his nesting site and ensure the safety of his partner and soon-to-hatch young.

We watched in admiration as he stood proudly against the sky, embodying both beauty and devotion. Moments like this remind us how even the smallest creatures carry out the great cycles of care and protection that keep nature in perfect balance.
