Harlequin Harmony - Harlequin Ducks
The Story Behind the Image of Harlequin Harmony
One evening while out for a drive up into the mountains of Jasper, Alberta, we followed a narrow mountain river that twisted its way through the valley, its torrent current rushing around jagged rocks and sharp bends. Knowing Harlequin Ducks love this kind of fast-moving water, I carefully scanned the river in hopes of spotting one - looking earnestly for any sign of movement among the swirling currents.
Then, suddenly, I saw something bobbing up and down in the rapids. To my delight, it was a Harlequin Duck! And just a couple of feet away was its mate. We watched in awe as this rare and beautiful pair held their own against the strong current, diving for larvae, small fish, and fish eggs - disappearing below the surface and popping back up like little bobbers.
A few minutes later, they released their hold and drifted downstream with the current. We quickly jumped back into our vehicle and drove ahead, hoping for one last glimpse. To our delight, we could see them rounding the bend and coming into view! Soon the pair made their way to a large rock right in front of us! There they climbed from the water, settled side by side, and began to preen and rest together.
It was one of those unforgettable moments in nature - peaceful, powerful, and humbling - as we stood quietly along the rushing river, sharing a rare connection with these remarkable Harlequin Ducks in perfect harmony with their wild surroundings.
