Article: In The Shadows

Two red fox kits sitting in green grass.

In The Shadows

One evening, we set out to look for a group of red fox kits a neighbor had told us about on her property. After quietly scanning the area, we spotted them—playful and full of energy in a field near the edge of the trees.

We were photographing from a safe distance, using our long lenses to ensure we didn’t disturb them, when everything suddenly shifted.

The mother fox appeared, and in an instant, she and most of her kits darted into the trees. Two little ones remained behind. From the shadows, she let out a sharp “yip,” guiding them to stay put. The kits froze immediately, their eyes locked on us—the unexpected intruders.

Knowing how important it is not to interfere, we quickly captured a few images and began to back away.

As we turned to leave, the mother called again, and the two kits sprang into action, racing to her side and disappearing into the safety of the trees.

In that moment, we were reminded why keeping a respectful distance matters—allowing these wild families to carry on, safe and undisturbed.
