Nature's Masterpiece
Whenever we find ourselves driving through Kananaskis Country, there’s one spot I can never seem to pass without stopping. Looking down over Smut Creek near Engadine Lodge, with Mount Nestor rising in the distance, it feels like stepping into a quiet moment that was meant to be savored.
On this cool autumn evening, the air had that crisp stillness that only fall can bring. I had been experimenting with a new blue and gold polarizing filter, curious to see how it might soften the glare of the setting sun and reveal more of the scene before me. As the light began to fade, I adjusted my camera, watching closely as the filter transformed what I was seeing.
What unfolded was something I hadn’t expected. The warm tones of the sunset deepened and spread across the landscape, the glow settling gently over the creek and surrounding hills. The polarizer didn’t just reduce the light, it seemed to draw out a richness and calm that felt almost tangible.
Standing there, camera in hand, I felt that familiar sense of stillness that certain places carry. A quiet reminder to slow down, to look a little longer, and to take it all in.
This view, this moment, and this place have stayed with me ever since. Of all the landscapes we’ve been fortunate enough to witness, this one will always feel like one of nature’s true masterpieces.
