Article: Mothers Tutelage

A cow and calf moose drinking water.

Mothers Tutelage

A young moose calf enters the world weighing up to 30 pounds, growing quickly in those first vital months—gaining nearly a pound a day in spring, and eventually up to four pounds daily as summer progresses.

But growth is only part of the story. Survival is the real challenge.

From the moment they are born, moose calves must learn to navigate a world filled with predators, wolves, cougars, and bears among them. For this reason, they remain close to their mothers for well over a year, relying on her not only for protection, but for knowledge. She teaches them where to go.

Where to feed and where to find essential nutrients, like natural mineral licks hidden within the landscape.

On this particular day, we found a cow and her calf at one of these mineral-rich spots, quietly taking turns drinking from the shallow water that had collected there.

From a safe distance, using a long lens, we watched. Waited. Listened.

There’s a rhythm to moments like this—unspoken, patient, and delicate.

Then, in a quiet, almost playful moment, I softly whispered, “now together.”

And as if the moment chose to unfold just right…

They did. Mother and calf, side by side. For just a second.

Long enough to capture what would become one of my most cherished images.

Moments like this remind us that nature isn’t something we control.

But sometimes… If we’re patient enough… It meets us halfway.
