Article: Whispering Pines

Whispering Pines

One evening while driving through the forest, I came across this very tentative Great Grey Owl perched about 20 feet up in the pine trees.

Sitting quietly among the soft, trailing “old man’s beard” lichens, he blended into his surroundings so perfectly it would have been easy to miss him… if not for those striking yellow eyes that always seem to catch my attention.

As the largest of the owl family, this incredible, stealth-like bird can have a wingspan reaching up to 5 feet (150 cm). Yet despite its size, it moves through the forest with complete silence.

It never ceases to amaze me how something so large can glide effortlessly through dense trees, leaving nothing behind but the gentle sound of wind whispering through the pines.
