Autumn Splendor
Often when I photograph wildlife, it’s surrounded by endless shades of green—the steady backdrop nature gives us through much of the year.
But when autumn arrives… everything changes.
The landscape transforms into a tapestry of colour, and it’s during this season that I especially love photographing the great grey owl as it blends seamlessly into its autumn surroundings.
At this time of year, spotting one becomes even more of a challenge.
Their camouflage is remarkable.
Soft greys and browns echo the tones of dried grasses, weathered wood, and fading leaves. It takes a trained eye—and a lot of patience—to notice the subtle differences that reveal their presence.
While driving the backroads, I’ve learned to scan the landscape carefully.
Fence posts in the distance often hold the key.
Every so often, one will appear just slightly taller… just slightly different.
And that’s where you’ll find them.
Perched quietly, perfectly still, listening intently for the faint movement of rodents in the tall grasses below. Along ditches and fence lines, they wait—focused, precise, and completely in tune with their environment.
It’s a moment of stillness within motion.
Of presence within camouflage.
And for me…
This is autumn at its finest.
