Curls
Driving along the breathtaking Kananaskis it’s not uncommon to spot one of the rockies’ most iconic animals, rocky mountain bighorn sheep, laying high along the rugged cliff faces.
There’s always a sense of excitement when you see them.
Perched effortlessly on steep, rocky ledges, these incredible animals move with a confidence that seems almost impossible. But it’s the mature rams that truly capture your attention. Their massive, curling horns, thick, ridged, and beautifully shaped, are a striking symbol of both strength and survival in the wild.
If you look closely, you’ll notice the dark growth rings etched into each curve. Much like the rings of a tree, these lines tell a story of age, with some horns weighing up to 14 kilograms (30 pounds). Each year of life is marked within those spirals, a living record carried proudly atop their heads.
But these horns are more than just impressive to look at.
They are a symbol of status within the herd, and a powerful tool during the fall rut. When the season arrives, the mountains echo with the thunder of rams colliding in dramatic head-to-head battles. These clashes, driven by instinct and survival, determine dominance and the chance to pass on their genetics.
Watching these moments unfold, whether quietly grazing along the roadside or standing boldly against the mountain cliffs, is a powerful reminder of the raw beauty and resilience of wildlife in the Canadian Rockies.
