A wild horses standing in the foothills of Alberta.

Wildies

Out in western Alberta, small bands of wild horses still roam freely through the foothills we’ve come to call home. Around here, they’re lovingly known as “Wildies.” Some of these horses trace their roots back to the 1930s, when working horses were turned loose after coal mines and logging camps shut down during the Depression. Over time, others joined them… horses that escaped or were abandoned, adding to the mix of breeds you see today.

On this particular day, we came across a small band just west of Sundre. They seemed calm and unbothered by our presence, but we always keep our distance. With our long lenses, we were able to quietly observe and capture their beauty without disturbing them.

Truthfully, there are many days we drive for hours and never see a single horse. But on the days we do, something shifts. There’s a quiet kind of awe in watching them… knowing they live freely, on their own terms, in a landscape that still feels a little wild.
