“Precision”

Truly a symbol of the vast northern Arctic of Canada is the beautiful Snowy Owl.  Every winter I look forward to the return of these amazing owls to their southern habitat, often just a few hours from my home. This year had been a particularly mild winter and with no sightings in my usual area, I extended my search area further north. Much to my delight, I happened to spot this magnificent female snowy as she was approaching the only trees I could see for miles. I was truly mesmerized by her graceful precision as she selectively chose just the right tiny branch that could sustain her weight. Since they can’t turn their eyes, but instead turn their head to see, her slightly tilted head enhanced her accuracy for just the right landing point. Even though they only average 4.5 lbs (2kg), it never ceases to amaze me how these large owls are able to balance themselves so well on such a tiny branch!
