Soaking Up the Sun
Some moments in the wild feel like pure contentment…
While on a brown bear trip in Lake Clark National Park, we set out one day with our guide to explore the rugged coastline in search of cliff-dwelling shorebirds. The air was fresh, the ocean gently rolling beneath us, and the cliffs ahead held the promise of something new.
But nature had a different moment waiting for us.
As we approached the shoreline, we spotted him.
A sea otter, floating effortlessly on his back, drifting with the rhythm of the water. Completely at ease. Completely unbothered. His paws tucked close, his face turned toward the sky, as if he was simply soaking in the warmth of the sun.
There was no urgency. No movement beyond the gentle rise and fall of the tide.
In a place defined by rugged landscapes and powerful wildlife, this small, peaceful scene felt almost unexpected… and yet, perfectly fitting.
We slowed the boat, taking care not to disturb him, and just watched.
Moments like this remind us that the wild isn’t always about action or intensity. Sometimes, it’s about stillness… about trust in your surroundings… about simply being.
Soaking Up the Sun captures that quiet pause, a fleeting glimpse of peace in the vastness of the ocean… and a reminder that even in the wild, there’s time to rest.
