Mystical Messenger

Ravens have always held a certain kind of mystery for me. Their intelligence, their curiosity, and especially their voices… they never seem to run out of ways to surprise you. Out in the wild, I've often heard them glug, gurgle, and click, carrying on conversations that feel far more complex than we understand. It's said they have over 30 different vocalizations, and after years of listening to them, I believe it.

But one experience in the Great Bear Rainforest stands out above all the rest.

We had stopped for lunch with our guide in a small clearing near a river, deep in spirit bear country. It didn't take long before a raven spotted us. Perched somewhere nearby, it began calling out loudly, as if announcing to the entire forest that we had arrived. And then, just as suddenly… everything went quiet.

A few moments passed, and then we heard it.

A low, steady purring sound… unmistakably like a cougar.

In a place like that, your senses sharpen quickly. Cougars are very real out there, and for a brief moment, we all wondered if we were no longer alone in the way we had hoped. When someone asked our guide if that was what we were hearing, he simply smiled and said, "look up."

High above us, tucked into the branches of an old-growth giant, sat a large raven… watching us.

And purring.

It was one of those moments that stops you in your tracks. A reminder of just how intelligent and playful these birds can be, and how much there still is to learn about the wild places we spend time in.

That was a first for me… and one I won't soon forget.
