Deep Snow - Great Grey Owl

Story Behind the Image of Deep Snow

Winter has a way of revealing both the harshness and resilience of nature. On this frigid day, with over five feet of snow that had accumulated in the forest, it softened every sound and contour. Yet high atop an almost completely buried spruce, a silent hunter waited - the great grey owl.

He sat perfectly still; his piercing gaze focused on the unseen world beneath the snow. To the human eye, the forest seemed lifeless, but to him, it was alive with the faintest whispers of movement. Using his extraordinary hearing, he can detect the scurry of a vole tunneling far below the surface - a sound we could never hope to hear.

The great grey owl’s facial disc works much like a satellite dish, funneling sound toward his ears with astonishing precision. With this gift, he can dive through snow up to two feet (60 cm) deep, striking his hidden prey with accuracy that seems almost supernatural. Incredibly, these owls have even been known to break through crusted snow strong enough to hold the weight of a full-grown person.

This image, Deep Snow, captures that remarkable patience - a master of adaptation waiting for the perfect moment, a silent reminder of the strength and stillness found in the heart of winter.
