Winter Blues - Blue Jay

There’s nothing quite like the flash of brilliant blue against a canvas of white snow to lift the spirits on a cold winter’s day. This striking Blue Jay perched gracefully on a snow-covered spruce branch was a welcome splash of color in the stillness of winter. Its clear, piercing “jay, jay, jay” call echoed through the forest, a lively reminder that even in the quietest season, nature’s voice endures.

Ironically, despite their dazzling blue feathers, Blue Jays aren’t truly blue at all. Their color is an illusion - created by the microscopic structure of their feathers that refract light, much like a prism, revealing vibrant blues in sunlight. When seen in shadow or backlight, their feathers appear a muted brownish-gray, exposing their true pigment.

This small marvel of nature reminds us that beauty often lies not in what we see on the surface, but in the wonder hidden beneath. On even the coldest days, the Blue Jay brings a burst of color, curiosity, and joy - chasing away the winter blues in the most unexpected way.
