The Lookout
While photographing grizzly bears in central British Columbia along a winding river, we often found ourselves looking up as much as we looked along the shoreline.
High above the trees, perched with quiet authority, were the bald eagles.
From these elevated vantage points, they held a true bird’s-eye view of the landscape watchful, patient, and always aware.
The timing couldn’t have been more perfect.
The salmon were just beginning their annual spawn.
With this return of life to the river came a surge of activity. Grizzly bears moved along the banks, feeding heavily on the nutrient-rich heads and organs of the fish—essential fuel as they prepared for the long winter ahead.
And where there are bears…there are eagles.
Never far away, these powerful birds waited for their moment. Once a bear moved on, the eagles would descend, quickly claiming what remained—ensuring nothing went to waste.
It’s a powerful cycle. Each species playing its role. Each moment connected to something larger.
Watching it unfold is a reminder that the wild is never random.
It is balanced. Intentional.
And beautifully interconnected.
