The Majestic Wild Horses of Alberta: Why They Need Our Help
The Alberta’s wild horses are a symbol of freedom and resilience, roaming the foothills and open landscapes of Canada’s western frontier. However, these magnificent creatures face increasing threats from habitat loss, government culling, and human encroachment. As passionate wildlife photographers and advocates, we believe in taking action to protect them—and you can help too.
The Threats Facing Alberta’s Wild Horses
Despite their deep-rooted history in the region, Alberta’s wild horses are not officially recognized as a protected species. This leaves them vulnerable to roundups, where they are often captured and removed from their natural habitat.
The government’s plans this year include eradicating wild horses through culls or sterilization. Officials claim that the horses are destroying the grazing land on the eastern slopes of Alberta, but research shows that it is actually the cattle on the leased lands that are causing the most damage. These horses have roamed the region for hundreds of years, with bloodlines dating back to the early days of European exploration. Their place in our heritage is invaluable, and eradicating them would be an irreversible loss to both our natural history and cultural legacy.
How Help Alberta Wildies Society (HAWS) is Making a Difference
Help Alberta Wildies Society (HAWS) is a nonprofit dedicated group of people working endlessly to protect and preserve these horses through advocacy, rescue missions, and sustainable management efforts. They monitor herds, rescue injured and orphaned foals, perform accurate aerial counts and educate the public about the importance of conservation.
How You Can Support Wild Horse Conservation
We have chosen to support HAWS through our Wild Horses Collection Fundraiser where 30% of every sale from this collection goes directly to support their mission.
