Mystical Messesger

“Mystical Messenger”

Ravens never cease to amaze me with their unique vocal abilities and to be able to mimic other animals. I’ve always enjoyed hearing them glug and gurgle when out in the wilderness, as they’ve been known to have over 33 different vocalizations. But the most unique experience I’ve ever had with one was while we were in the Great Bear Rainforest in search of spirit bears. We had stopped for lunch with our guide in a clearing near a river. A raven had spotted us and proceeded to loudly announce to the rest of the woodland critters of our nearby presence. And then everything went quiet. A few moments later we could hear a distinct purring sound, like that of a cougar - and considering where we were, cougars were a big possibility! When someone asked our guide if that was a cougar we could hear, he just smiled and said, “look up.” There high above us, tucked inside the old growth forest, was a large raven looking down at us - purring!  That was definitely a first for me!
