Landrover
“Land Rover”
In the fall of 2020, we took six photographers on a weeklong Grizzly Photo Safari in Central British Columbia, Canada. During the day the local guides would take us up and down the Chilko River in river boats in search of these amazing bears. The salmon was just starting to return to spawn here which always brings the bears down to feast on the protein rich fish that is essential for their winter hibernation. For the cubs this would be their 1st time experiencing water and it was obvious that they would do anything to avoid it! While the mothers were out in the water fishing, the cub(s) would follow them along the riverbanks waiting for them to bring their catch ashore. After the mothers had a good feast in the water, they would occasionally bring one to their cub(s) on the riverbank, but eventually they would lure the cubs into the water for their dinner to encourage them to develop their much-needed swimming and catching skills. Regardless, this particular cub was a true land rover, as he would walk continuously along the riverbank, over logs, through thickets, across boat docks, anything to avoid going into the water, while following his mother as she fished and dined in the river.
